Danny McLewin ne ha combinata un’altra delle sue.
Come se non bastasse la bellezza di quello che fa come Psychemagik, ha deciso di aprire una nuova label. E di farlo nella maniera significativa e rilevante che vi aspettereste da lui.
La nuova avventura comincia con un disco di Lokier & The Machine – e per quanto questo possa avere poco significato per alcuni, è in realtà l’ulteriore dimostrazione di quanto Danny sia stato “sul pezzo” negli ultimi tempi.
Basta informarsi un po’ sulle uscite recenti di Lokier – tra cui un nuovo EP chiamato “Last One”, esattamente all’incrocio fra techno e new-wave – per capire facilmente perché ha senso affidare il debutto di Spirits Records a questa donna messicana, in questo caso in compagnia di Jason ‘The Machine’ Greer.
“White Room” ti conquista sin dal primo battito. Passo lento, ma inarrestabile. La tensione sale inesorabilmente. È intricata, metallica, eppure in qualche modo va dritta al punto. Arrivi alla fine di quei cinque minuti e cinquanta secondi e pensi che sarebbe dovuta durare il doppio. Mentre stai ancora pensando alla prima traccia, arriva “Stained Glass” a portare la velocità molto più in alto, entrando in territori corrosivamente acidi sin dall’inizio. Per non parlare di quello che succede quando entra quella chitarra. Dopodiché “Pearly Hate” rallenta tutto di nuovo. Nebbiosa ed umida, finge di portarti da qualche parte, senza arrivarci davvero.
E quel “da qualche parte” potrebbe essere proprio la traccia finale, gli otto deliranti minuti di “Red Floor”. Qui lo stacco a due minuti e mezzo è il punto di non ritorno. E d’altronde, perché mai vorreste tornare indietro?
McLewin ha messo l’asticella delle aspettative molto in alto con questa uscita, ma sappiamo anche che lui è ben capace di tenersi su questi livelli. Ci aspettiamo altre bellezze da Spirits, questa non può essere un’una tantum.

Danny McLewin is at it again.
As if the beauty of his Psychemagik output wasn’t enough, he’s now decided to open a new label. And he does it in the meaningful, story-telling way you would expect from him.
Danny’s new adventure starts with a release from Lokier – and while this might not mean much to some people, it is actually further testament of how much Danny has been on the ball recently. Just do a bit of research on Lokier’s recent output – including a new EP called “Last One”, placed right at the junction between techno and new-wave and in fact representing a very powerful collision between the two styles – and you’ll easily see why it was sensible to get this Mexican woman to set the tone for Spirits Records.
“White Room” wins you over from the very first beat. Slow pace, but relentless. It builds tension inexorably. It is intricate, metallic, and still somehow hitting straight at the right spots. You get to the end of those 5’50”s and think it should have lasted twice as much. You are still processing your thoughts on the first track, and here comes “Stained Glass”, bringing things up to a much faster speed, delving into corrosively acid territories from the outset. And wait until that guitar comes in. Then “Pearly Hate” comes and slows things down a bit again. Foggy and misty; pretending to lead you somewhere, but not quite getting there.
That “somewhere” could well be the eight delirious minutes of the final track “Red Floor”. The drop just about 2’30” is the point of no return here. And why would you want to go back after all?
McLewin has set the bar very high with this one, but we also know he can very much keep up to these standards. We can smell more goodness coming from Spirits, it just cannot be a one-off.
