Il nome di Dj Aakmael suonerà nuovo a molti, ma è già sulla scena da tempo. E sembra essere in ascesa, dato che i suoi lavori più recenti sono per la prestigiosa People Of Earth, e per la Scissor and Thread di Francis Harris. Questa prossima uscita su Dogmatik sembra destinata a metterlo ancora di più in evidenza.
Non è facile distinguersi con un EP house di quattro tracce. L’offerta di dischi simili è talmente vasta, che uscite come questa rischiano di passare inosservate. Per cui è necessario mostrare grandi capacità di produzione; e, da parte sua, chi ascolta deve rimuovere i pregiudizi che possano far pensare all’ennesimo EP house.
Questo è quello che abbiamo fatto a Frequencies. Abbiamo lasciato scorrere le quattro tracce senza interruzione, resistendo alla tentazione di ascoltare a salti. E pensiamo di aver fatto bene: questo EP è tra le migliori uscite deep-house in cui ci siamo recentemente imbattuti.
Dall’inizio di “Dis Beat”, le influenze della deep-house di Detroit vengono fuori chiare, con vocal sparsi e tastiere su una ritmica marciante. “Aakstein” è chiaramente ispirata da Mr. Fingers (territorio rischioso: ci sono fin troppe tracce così. Ma Aakstein ne esce bene, evolvendosi nell’arco dei suoi oltre sei minuti).
“Lost in Atlantis” riprende ed evolve il mood della prima traccia, arricchendosi di inserti di chitarra e di un potente parlato. E “School Old” tiene fede al proprio titolo, ancora una volta richiamando Larry Heard.
Se siete fan di Kai Alce, Patrice Scott e simili, qui c’è dell’ottimo materiale per i vostri Dj set. E non stupisce che Aakmael presto uscirà anche sulla NDATL dello stesso Kai Alce. Per questa release della Dogmatik dovrete attendere il 12 marzo.

Dj Aakmael’s name might sound new to some, but he’s not new to the scene; and he seems to be very much on the rise, given some of his latest works were for the prestigious People Of Earth series (2016) and for Francis Harris’s Scissor and Thread imprint. This upcoming work on Dogmatik looks set to put him even more under the spotlight.
Standing out in making a four-tracker deep-house EP is tricky. The offer of similar releases is so vast, that records like this could get easily overlooked. So, on one side, it takes flawless production skills to catch the most seasoned ear; and, on the other side (the listeners’ side) you need to approach records like this like a blank slate, putting aside the bias that could make you think you are hearing just another house EP.
That’s what we did at Frequencies HQ. We let these four tracks play without interruption, resisting the common temptation to flick through them. And it paid off – this EP is definitely high up in the league of the deep-house records we heard in recent times.
From the inception of “Dis Beat”, all the influences of Detroit’s deep house school come out, with warm keys and sparse vocals on a steady beat. “Aakenstein” is unequivocally inspired by Mr. Fingers (risky territory this one: there’s just too many tracks trying to sound like that. “Aakenstein” comes out of it well though, evolving in a captivating way throughout its 6+ minutes).
“Lost in Atlantis” goes back to a mood similar to the first track, and it evolves it with subtle guitar inserts and powerful spoken words. Finally, “School Old” does what it says on the tin – and again, Aakmael must have thought a lot about Larry Heard in crafting this one.
If you are a fan of Kai Alce, Patrice Scott, and the like, there’s great material for your DJ sets here. On reflection, it is no wonder that apparently Aakmael has a release on Kai’s NDATL coming up. You’ll have to wait until the 12th of March to get your hands on this Dogmatik release.
