Brokntoys è uno di quei segreti nascosti in piena vista.
Chi segue la scena techno-electro, particolarmente quella britannica, probabilmente ha già avuto modo di apprezzare questa piccola ma attiva etichetta di East London, che si appresta a compiere 5 anni avendo appena trascorso quello che il suo stesso team definisce come l’anno più intenso finora, con 10 dischi alle spalle. Eppure, la sensazione è che Brokntoys possa ancora crescere tanto, anche in quantità di sostenitori, pur mantenendo l’ethos musicale senza compromessi che l’ha contraddistinta sinora.
Il 2018 comincia per Brokntoys con un EP di 5 tracce prodotte da altrettanti artisti. Tracce tutte diverse l’una dall’altra, eppure tutte perfettamente in linea con l’identità di Brokntoys. Dalla sottile deep-techno di Ben Cohen “Entrance”, alle distorsioni acide di Monotoxine “Positive Thinking”, il lato A già ci dice che non ci sono schemi in cui farsi intrappolare. Il lato B si apre con la visionaria “Start Transmission” della nuova scoperta tedesca Tharsis Shelter Unit, e prosegue con l’electro alla Convextion di Stratowerx “Zero Hour Dispatch”; per poi finire con “Night Rider” di Furious Frank, che continua nello stesso solco.
Come spesso accade con le uscite di Brokntoys, è difficile stabilire esprimere preferenze sulle tracce. Ancora una volta la label ci regala una riserva di ottima musica, di quelle che Trevor Jackson definirebbe “musica per menti malate”. Di sicuro hanno iniziato il 2018 ricominciando dove si erano fermati, e non abbiamo motivo di dubitare che continueranno così.

Brokntoys is a secret hiding in plain sight.
Those who follow the techno and electro scene, particularly the UK one, probably know this small and lively label of East London, which will celebrate its 5th birthday in 2018 having just gone through its busiest year to date. Nonetheless, there is a feeling that Brokntoys could still get a larger fan base without losing the uncompromising ethos which has characterised it until now.
Brokntoys’s 2018 starts with an EP of 5 tracks, produced by as many artists. These tracks are all different, but still sound all perfectly in line with the identity that the label has grown until now. From the subtle deep-techno of Ben Cohen’s “Entrance”, to the acid distortions of Monotoxine’s “Positive Thinking”, the A-side already tells us that we shouldn’t put anything into boxes here. The B-side starts with the visionary “Start Transmission” by the German discovery Tharsis Shelter Unit, and carries on with the Convextion-inspired electro of “Zero Hour Dispatch”, before ending with Furious Frank’s “Night Rider” which follows the same musical path.
As is often the case with Brokntoys releases, picking a favourite track is hard and probably even pointless. This EP is yet another repository of quality music, of the type that Trevor Jackson would define “music for sick minds”. What is sure is that these guys picked up in 2018 where they left off, and there are all chances they will carry on like this.
