Opal Sunn deve (o meglio devono, visto che è un duo) avere poca voglia di cercare titoli originali per i suoi dischi, considerato che questo “II” fa seguito (indovinate un po’) a “I”, uscito a Marzo dell’anno scorso con discreto successo. Se quello del 2017 era un buon EP che, se proprio dobbiamo, potremmo mettere nella sfera deep-house, il nuovo “II” è un lavoro di spessore ancora superiore, in cui il duo prende una direzione maggiormente techno, e si inabissa in ulteriori profondità.
In un EP di quattro tracce è una rara benedizione quella di avere l’imbarazzo della scelta; fortunatamente questo è uno dei casi, con un ampio spettro di stili interpretati con autorità.
Dalla marciante “Chameleon”, alla fluttuante “Serafin” che per certi versi ricorda Minilogue e Cobblestone Jazz; dalla ruvida oscurità di “Vertigo” all’intricata acidità di “Proxima”, questo è un disco tutto in quattro quarti in cui, ad un attento ascolto, ogni traccia ha il suo bel senso.

Opal Sunn must not be too keen to look for catchy titles for their EPs, seeing as this new “II” is the follow-up to (surprise surprise!) a record called “I”, which was out in March last year and was warmly welcomed by many names in the scene. The 2017 EP was already a good piece of work, which we could include in the deep-house Venn diagram if we need to; however, “II” is an even superior effort, in which Opal Sunn take a clear techno direction, and venture into further depths.
It is a rare blessing to be spoilt for choice in a four-track EP; luckily this is the case here, with a wide range of styles on show, all interpreted in an authoritative way. From the marching beat of “Chameleon”, to the floating Minilogue-esque “Seraphin”; from the raw darkness of “Vertigo” to the intricate acidity of “Proxima”, this is an all-4/4 record in which, at a careful listen, every single track makes very much sense.
