E’ aprile e sembra che finalmente sia arrivata la primavera a NYC! Primavera che significa ancora più feste ed ancora più techno!!
Incominciamo con l’ultimo party a cui ho assistito. Venerdì scorso il promoter locale Twice as Proper, capitanato da Shadi and Daniele Ciocio (un ragazzo di origine italiana), ha portato in consolle alcuni talenti cittadini insieme ad altri provenienti da Washington D.C.
C’è sempre una bella atmosfera al National Underground, un club di basso profilo ma con un suono di altissima qualità. Daniele spinge sulla techno più oscura, inoltre è anche un ottimo produttore – cercatelo su Soundcloud. Volevo sentire Onda Skillet. Onda viene dalla Costa Rica ma si è trasferito qui e le sue produzioni sono davvero buone; minimal techno molto ipnotica, che mib fa venire in mente la Raster-Noton. Tuttavia a sto giro si è lasciato andare ed ha proposto un set di techno dritta.
Tutti i Dj’s erano in ottima forma ed in particolare segnalo i set di Oliver Caine e Dave Martin. dalla Capitale.
Sabato la scelta era molto ricca come al solito ma sono finita al party Dissolve. Dissolve è un bi-coast promoter, che organizza feste sia sulla costa occidentale a Denver, Seattle e Los Angeles che a New York. Questa volta la location era un posto a Brooklyn in cui non ero mai stata, ma, appena messo piede lì dentro, capì subito che sarebbe stata una lunghissima notte!!
A causa delle leggi restrittive e dei raid della polizia sempre più parties stanno migrando in club ufficiali perciò è stato bello tornare a quella sensazione di vecchio magazzino abbandonato stavolta.
Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss da Chicago era l’artista di punta e l’ho incontrato mentre gironzolava ascoltando i Dj’s in apertura. Ho molto apprezzato la sua recente performance a Boiler Room, ed è sempre carino avere l’occasione di dire grazie!
Jamal mi ha mostrato il suo set up, che per quanto minimale era molto high tech, e mi ha spiegato che avrebbe eseguito un set totalmente improvvisato! Quella notte ha alzato il livello della techno/noise. Tuttavia la vera sorpresa della serata è stato un duo di Philadelphia chiamato Metasplice. Con un piccolo set up ed un groviglio di cavi hanno catturato le nostre menti. Non ho potuto vedere tutte le macchine che stavano usando ma lo show è stato incredibile. Live noise techno; magari non esattamente da ballare ma non per questo meno affascinante. Per gli amanti del noise questo è stato un grande evento perchè qui è raro imbattersi in cose del genere.
All’inizio del mese ho beccato il sempre bravo James Holden al Mister Saturday Night. E’ stata una festa molto divertente organizzata dall’Irlandese Eamon Harkin con una simpatica scenografia. Forse però ero un pò troppo stanca per rimanere fino alla fine siccome la note prima ero andata a vedere South London Ordnance. Non l’avevo ancora visto e devo dire che i promoters Turrbotaxx hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro. Prima di tutto l’entrata a soli $ 5 prima di mezzanotte è sempre un bonus e sono anche riuscita a visitare la Cameo Gallery a Williamsburg che mi è piaciuta parecchio.
La musica ha caratterizzato questo mese, sono stata molto fortunate ad avere due mix in esclusiva per il mio sito. Uno firmato da Arnaud le Texier, dj/producer francese, ed un altro, questa settimana, da Nir Shoshani da Tel Aviv. Li trovate entrambi su clubbersguidenewyork.com
Questo weekend ho voglia di gustarmi Amon Tobin che suonerà in djset al Le Poisson Rouge. Chiunque abbia visto “ISAM” non può aiutare ma può lasciarsi portar via dal talento e dalla visione artistica di quest’uomo e sarà interessante ascoltare cosa proporrà in veste di Dj! Non vedo l’ora! Il prossimo Terence Fixmer debutterà NYC debut suonando all’Erratic party insieme al mitico Edit Select! Che notte ci aspetta!

It’s April and it feels like spring at last in NYC! Spring means even more parties and more techno!!
Let’s start with the most recent I attended. Last Friday the local promoter Twice as Proper, headed up by Shadi and Daniele Ciocio (himself a native Italian) brought some local and Washington D.C talent to the decks. It’s always a good time at National Underground, a low key club with high fi sound. Daniele plays the darker side of techno and is himself a great producer – check him out at soundcloud. I wanted to hear Onda Skillet. Onda is from Costa Rica but based here in the city and his productions are really good; very hypnotic, minimal techno, reminds me of music from the Raster-Noton label. However he let loose on Saturday and played a driving techno set. All the dj’s were in tremendous form with solid sets from the D.C dj’s, Oliver Caine and Dave Martin.
Saturday there was a lot of choice as usual but I ended up at the Dissolve party. Dissolve is a bi-coast promoter, doing parties on the west in Denver, Seattle and Los Angeles as well as NYC. This time it was in a venue new to me in Brooklyn and I knew as soon as I walked in I was in for a good night of dancing. Due to current laws and constant threat of police raids – more and more parties are migrating to legitimate clubs so it was nice to get the old ‘warehouse’ feel for this Dissolve party. Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss from Chicago, was the headliner and I found him casually hanging out listening to the opening djs. I had really enjoyed his Boiler Room set most recently and it’s always nice to get a chance to offer thanks!
Jamal showed me his set up which though minimal was quite high tech and explained that he was going to do an all ‘improvised’ set! He did and he raised the bar for techno/noise that night. The real surprise however was a Philadelphia duo named Metasplice. They had a small table set up with a plethora of wires that boggled the mind. I couldn’t see all the machines they were using but their set was amazing. Live ‘noise’ techno; not particularly dance music but excellent nonetheless. For Noise lovers, this was a real treat as it’s not too often you get to hear it here.
Earlier in the month I caught the always amazing James Holden at Mister Saturday Night. This was a really fun party headed up by Irish man Eamon Harkin with really nice decoration and lights. However I was perhaps a little too tired to stay till the very end as I’d been to see South London Ordnance the night before. I’d not seen him and I have to say the promoters Turrbotaxx did a great job. First of all the admission ($5.00) before midnight is always a bonus and I also got to see the Cameo Gallery space in Williamsburg which I hadn’t been to before and really enjoyed.
Music wise this month, I was very lucky to have two exclusive guest mixes on my own site. One from Arnaud le Texier, the French dj/producer and one this week from Nir Shoshani from Tel Aviv. Both are on clubbersguidenewyork.com
This weekend, am looking forward to checking out Amon Tobin who is playing a DJ set at Le Poisson Rouge. Anyone who has seen Amon’s live show “ISAM” cannot help but be blown away by this man’s talent and artistic vision but it will be interesting to hear what he will play as a dj!! Very much looking forward to that!! And next weekend Terence Fixmer will make his NYC debut playing the Erratic party with the awesome Edit Select! What a night that will be!
